Nathaniel Deutsch, professor of history at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he is also co-director of the Center for Jewish Studies, will give a lecture at Washington and Lee University on Monday, Sept. 22, at 5 p.m. in Sydney Lewis Hall, classroom B.The title of his lecture is “ ‘The New is Forbidden by the Torah’: Minhag and the Radical Roots of Ultra-Orthodox Judaism.” The talk will be followed by a dialogue on “Jewish and Muslim Legal Fundamentalisms” with Deutsch and Joel A. Blecher, assistant professor of religion at W&L, followed by a Q&A period. The talk is free and open to the public.
