Alumni College: A Family Adventure in Science

July 22, 2015 - July 25, 2015

Tracey Riley

Come share W&L and Lexington with your children and grandchildren in our special family-oriented campus program, built around amazing explorations and discoveries with the W&L faculty. Now in its seventh year, this program is specially designed for children ages 7-14, their parents and grandparents. See what biologists are doing on the W&L campus as well as some of the exciting new developments in the Science Center.

Do we mean long days locked in a classroom with boring lectures? No way, we know better! Instead, we'll explore hot topics that reflect environmental and biological research at W&L, all with the idea that science is best learned by doing it. Our experiments will allow everyone to measure vitamins in vegetables, watch crayfish fight, and feed butterflies. You'll even take high-speed pictures of crayfish battles and butterflies in flight, and one of the crayfish will be in your control as a living robot.

We'll take some walks to discover the summer beauty of Rockbridge County and things that you've never seen before, even though they were always there. We'll do some experiments outside, catch butterflies and crayfish (for science), and learn some fascinating and useful things about vegetables and gardening-prepare yourself for lots of laughter and surprises.

The other key ingredient is provided by the town that many parents and grandparents made their own when they were students. Old-fashioned fun is available on demand, and you'll have free time to poke around Lexington or go to Goshen.

Ice cream is plentiful. This program is directed by Bill Hamilton, department chair and professor of biology. Bill will be joined by Professors Sarah Blythe and David Marsh (both in biology) and other kid-friendly colleagues.
