Please join us for a public lecture with Princeton historian, author and artist Nell Irvin Painter, notable for her works on Southern history of the 19th century. She will present on "The hard parts of 'The History of White People.'" Books will be available for purchase prior to the event with a signing afterward. This lecture is part of the Mellon Project for the study of History in the Public Sphere. The talk is free and open to the public.

Painter's best-selling book, "The History of White People," presents the definitive history of conceptions of white Americans from antiquity to the present. Yet certain parts have been difficult for readers to understand, notably the fact that the number of white races has changed over time. Painter explains this difficulty using images as well as words.
